Kite Flying- (Makar Sankranti): Wednesday 19th January 2011

Makar Sankranti 2011

Imperial College Hindu Society presents a BRAND NEW event, in association with Queen Mary Hindu Society, to celebrate the wonderful festival of Makar Sankranti.

Makar Sankranti has both astronomical and geographical implications related to our Planet Earth. So this can be termed as a “Festival of Nature”. Our Earth, which revolves around the Sun and rotates on its own axis, has a periodical movement. It circles around Sun in an elliptical orbit. Every six months it swings from one end to another. Those two points of transition of Earth are celebrated among the Hindu community as Sankramanas – Makara Sankramana in January and Karkataka (or Mithuna) Sakramana in June repectively.

Makar Sankranti is a major harvest festival celebrated in various parts of India. It commemorates the beginning of the harvest season and cessation of the northeast monsoon in South India.

Traditionally, Hindus all over the world fly kites and we will be joining in this tradition by flying kites all afternoon in Hyde Park! The event is free for all. So come along and enjoy this session of kite flying if you have ever wondered what is like to fly a kite or haven’t flown one in a long time and are looking forward to revisit the experience in Hyde Park!

Date: Wednesday, 19th January 2011

Time: 1:30 pm

Venue: Meet outside SAF Building at 1:30 pm, then we will proceed to Hyde Park
